BIO Announces Dr. Larry Walker as the Leadership and Legacy Award Recipient at the 2018 BIO World Congress

Philadelphia (July 19, 2018) –The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) today presented Dr. Larry Walker, co-editor in chief for the journal “Industrial Biotechnology,” with the third annual BIO Leadership and Legacy Award in Industrial Biotechnology and Agriculture. The award presentation took place during a lunch plenary session at the 2018 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology. The world’s largest industrial biotechnology and partnering event was held July 16-19, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Reflecting on this extensive career as an academic, studying and working closely with several American universities, Dr. Walker noted the industry’s influence on his success.

“You folks have had a big impact on how I think about innovation, probably more so than my academic colleagues, probably because you’re out there doing it,” said Dr. Walker. “It’s the people here that has had a major impact.”

“Dr. Larry Walker has been a tireless advocate for STEM education and industrial biotech innovation throughout his career that spans more than three decades,” added Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section. “The BIO Leadership and Legacy Award was created to honor an individual who has dedicated a significant portion of their career to growing the biobased economy. The combination of his careers in teaching, researching and covering the industrial biotechnology field makes him the perfect recipient for the Leadership and Legacy Award.”

Dr. Walker taught for more than 30 years in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department at Cornell University and has led multidiscipline research activities in a variety of disciplines. Additionally, Dr. Walker directed Cornell’s Biofuel Research Laboratory for five years.

Dr. Walker has served in numerous regional and national leadership roles. Since 2010, he has served as the Co-Editor in Chief for the journal “Industrial Biotechnology” where he has had the privilege of chronicling the exciting innovations that are coming out of our industrial biotechnology community.

As the third recipient of the Leadership and Legacy Award, Dr. Larry Walker joins Dr. Gord Surgeoner, Ontario Agri-Food Technologies, and Dr. Ganesh Kishore, Managing Partner, Spruce Capital Partners, as recipients of the Leadership and Legacy Award in Industrial Biotechnology and Agriculture.

The 2018 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology took place July 16-19, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. In addition to the exhibit hall, the 2018 BIO World Congress featured robust programming with four plenary sessions, 28 breakout sessions across seven tracks, 10 GreenTech Investor Sessions and 60 company and technical presentations.

The 2019 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology will take place July 8-11, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa.
