VIB is an entrepreneurial life sciences institute situated in Flanders, Belgium. VIB’s excellent research leads to new and innovative insights into normal and pathological life processes. Based on a close partnership with five Flemish universities – Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Hasselt University – and supported by a solid funding program from the Flemish government, VIB unites the expertise of all its collaborators and research groups in a single institute. Our institute has an excellent track record on translating basic scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. VIB’s Innovation and business team (VIB2) currently has a portfolio of 260 patent families. This team conducts about 120 partnering agreements with innovative companies each year. VIB has also a rich tradition in setting up start-up companies, indeed more than 30 start-ups employing about 1200 people have been established in the last 25 years. Last but not least, the VIB Discovery Sciences unit is the translational research lab of VIB2. A dedicated team of industry-experienced scientists aims on building a portfolio of valuable projects that deliver validated candidates for small molecule or biological therapeutics, and agrochemicals. The early discovery activities in VIB Discovery Sciences focus on creating value by de-risking innovative targets or approaches and demonstrating reproducibility and proof-of-concept for further development by the pharmaceutical industry.
Our goal at BIO2023 is to partner several opportunities in the fields of neurodegeneration, inflammation, infectious diseases and oncology. Last but not least, VIB has 10 institutional Core Facilities, providing support in a wide array of research fields and housing specialized scientific equipment and services for each discipline (e.g. bioinformatics, proteomics, nanobody production, bioimaging, protein production, single cell analysis and genomics). These core facilities can offer their services to academic and industrial parties.
