Peter McHugh has been with BIO for over 17 years, serving as the organization’s General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer since 2016. Peter previously served as BIO's Vice President of Business Strategies and Vice President for Business Operations, after serving as BIO’s Vice President & Deputy General Counsel and Compliance Officer. In his business strategies and operations roles, Peter supported business development opportunities for the industry by leading the team for BIO’s award-winning One-on-One Partnering system.
Peter has provided legal counsel to trade associations for more than thirty years, including at the American Plastics Council, the American Chemistry Council, the Chemical Manufacturers Association, and at the law firm of Collier, Shannon, Rill & Scott PLLC. His practice areas evolved from environmental law, to trade association law, to corporate law – with a focus on non-profit corporate law.
Peter started his career as a chemical engineer working as a process and product development engineer, and then technical brand manager for the Procter & Gamble Company. Peter also spent time as a technical sales representative for the Aqualon Company (a joint venture of Hercules and Henkel chemical companies at the time) before beginning his legal career.
Peter graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration with an M.B.A., and the University of Virginia School of Law with a J.D.
