What We're Listening To

Grab your earbuds and get outside—with the latest episodes of the I am BIO Podcast.

I am BIO podcast: Improving Food Systems: The Case of the Banana
The banana is the world’s most popular fruit, yet it could very soon go missing from our store shelves due to a disease we’ve seen once before. The banana helps tell the story of how biotech is a key tool in strengthening our food systems to make our favorite foods more resilient, more sustainable, and more accessible.

I am BIO podcast: BIO Changed COVID. But Did COVID Change Biotech?
This episode looks at the way biotech addressed the COVID crisis and explores how the crisis, in turn, changed the biotech industry—its reputation, its exposure to a broader audience and its willingness to adopt lessons learned from the pandemic.

What We're Reading: Spotlight on Climate

Here are a few must-reads about the role biotech can play in fighting the climate crisis.

BIOtechNOW: Trees Alone Can’t Solve Our Climate Issues
Admittedly, it feels good to believe that something as simple as planting trees will solve the climate crisis. It’s why companies promise to plant a tree for every purchase or tout carbon neutrality by protecting faraway forests. But the truth is that trees alone can’t solve our climate issues.

Fast Company: These ‘supertrees’ are engineered to capture more carbon
Part of the climate challenge isn’t just the transition to things like renewable energy and electric cars—it’s also about dealing with the oversupply of CO2 that’s already in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Innovature: Gene Editing Helps All of Our Seasonal Favorites
Thanks to gene editing, we’ll likely have all of our seasonal favorites to enjoy with family and friends for the long haul.

Innovature: Gene Editing Opens the Door to Less Thirsty Plants
Gene editing creates opportunities to alter crops so that plants can—among many things thrive under hotter conditions or get by on less water.

P.S. June 2021 was a particularly special Pride Month for BIO—and not only because many of us got the chance to celebrate with our friends in person thanks to the COVID-19 vaccines. BIO was thrilled to announce our new chair, Paul Hastings, CEO of Nkarta Therapeutics—and the first openly LGBTQ chair of the organization. Paul is one of many members of the LGBTQ+ community who have made important advances in science, medicine, and biotechnology—read more about Paul and four others in history you should know.
