Renewable Chemicals & Biobased Materials

BIO has recently put together a Presidential Green Chemistry Award fact sheet that highlights all of the industrial biotech and biobased technology applications awarded from the start of the program in 1996 up to 2013.  Each year awards are allotted to technologies that incorporate the use of green chemistry through the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge.  Industrial biotechnology has been recognized by EPA as a way to reduce or prevent pollution at its source.

Industrial biotechnology covers the application of biotechnology-based tools to traditional industrial processes (“bioprocessing”) and the manufacturing of bio-based products (such as fuels, chemicals and plastics) from renewable feedstocks.

The challenge of conversion of biomass – particularly lignocellulosic biomass and agricultural waste – into chemicals, materials and fuels is being approached in multiple directions and a slew of technologies are now being developed, tested and deployed in semicommercial or pilot stage.

The timing for building a biobased economy as an option to the current petroleum-based one, to provide fuels, chemicals, materials and energy sustainably for the long term future cannot be better.

Vigorous government support has played a key role in encouraging China’s development of a bio-based economy, especially in regard to biofuels. 

On July 26, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced four new project areas for the Biomass Crop Assistance Program.

To carry out military and humanitarian missions around the world, U.S. forces require reliable fuel supplies and secure supply lines. At the micro level, the military is as much at the mercy of high oil and gasoline prices as the average consumer. In addition, when you calculate the fully burdened cost of fuels, for instance a gallon of jet fuel delivered to the front lines in Afghanistan, it can be upwards of $400 per gallon. And, on a macro level, oil often comes from regions of the world that are not U.S. military allies. The need for great energy independence is therefore a very important national security issue.

All programs at the BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing are open to attendance by members of the media. Complimentary media registration is available to editors and reporters with valid press credentials working full time for print, broadcast or web publications.

BIO released a white paper on the growth and jobs potential of green chemicals.

The advanced biofuel industry can reduce reliance on oil and create green jobs; diverse federal programs are necessary to help producers secure financing for construction of projects. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today joined 34 other companies and trade associations to ask leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee to include the language of H.R. 5142, the Grow a Renewable Energy Economy Now – Jumpstart Other Biofuels (GREEN JOB) Act of 2010, in the next appropriate revenue vehicle considered by the House.

We are writing to caution against granting a waiver for the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). A number of groups and some governors seem to believe that the RFS is a substantial part of the equation when it comes to grain prices, and waiving the program this year or next will ease the impact of the drought on consumers. There is substantial evidence to the contrary.

Industrial biotechnology is the key enabling technology that is causing a dramatic paradigm shift in the production of fuels and chemicals. By building modern biorefineries and using industrial biotechnology our nation could significantly reduce its dependence on foreign sources of oil.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today thanked Senators Stabenow (D-MI), Coons (D-DE) and Franken (D-MN) for introducing S. 2271, the Renewable Chemicals Act of 2015, a bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide credits for the production of renewable chemicals and investments in renewable chemical production facilities.
