MEMBERSHIP
BIO ended its 10th anniversary year with 1,070 members — about double the membership of 1993, when BIO was created by merging two predecessor organizations.
BIO members range from start-up companies with a handful of employees to large multinationals. Members include firms pursuing biotechnology research and development, as well as state and regional biotech associations, service providers to the industry, and academic centers.
In 2003, BIO surveyed its members and found that conferences, advocacy and partnering activities are the most popular reasons for joining BIO. Among corporate members, advocacy was the top factor, cited by 74.2 percent of respondents.
Federal advocacy also topped the list of member-identified priorities for BIO, with 69.2 percent urging the organization to devote more resources to the activity over the next three to five years. BIO members also would like to see additional resources earmarked for communications and media outreach (44 percent), meetings and conferences (43.8 percent), and science and regulatory policy development (39.4 percent).
