Tsunami Relief Effort

A number of BIO members have donated aid to victims of the recent tsunami disaster:

Amgen

Amgen has made an initial $1 million donation to the Red Cross and has promised to match all employee donations to the relief efforts for six months.

Baxter

Baxter has shipped 200,000 units of IV fluids and administration sets and is in contact with AmeriCares to monitor changing needs in the affected region. They are evaluating the opportunities, if necessary, to increase manufacturing capacity of vital medical products to provide the level of aid needed. Their Alathur facility in India was immediately established as a collection and distribution point for emergency supplies, and Baxter India employees have donated a day's wage with a matching company contribution to the victims, along with basic cooking utensils, clothes and other essentials. Employees in Thailand are volunteering with the Red Cross, and donated 5,000 blood bags. Baxter will match employee contributions on a 2 to 1 basis, as well as contribute $1 million dollars to the relief effort.

Berlex

Berlex will donate $50,000 in cash to the relief agency, AmeriCares.

Biogen Idec, Inc.

Biogen has donated $100,000 in cash to the relief agency, AmeriCares

Bristol-Myers Squibb

Bristol-Myers Squibb has donated $1.1 million to the Red Cross and essential medicines including antibiotics and antifungals to treat up to 75,000 patients. Bristol-Myers Squibb will also match all employee donations to the American and International Red Cross.

Dow

Dow is responding to the disaster with a pledge of $5 million in aid, which includes a $1 million monetary contribution to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, up to $1 million in matching individual contributions from Dow’s more than 40,000 employees and 70,000 retirees around the world, and an additional $3 million in the form of vital products, technology and funds to assist in the longer-term reconstruction efforts. Dow will work with governments, agencies and other interested parties in the affected areas to determine how best to provide support.

Genentech

Genentech donated $500,000, and will match employee contributions up to $100,000.

GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline has announced a donation of $3.8 million to organizations working on relief operations in the disaster area. GSK has also shipped 1 million doses of antibiotics and will ship another 1 million this week. They will also donate 600,000 doses of typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccines. GSK will match US-based employee donations and is seeking to target funds from its Global Community Partnership Program to support healthcare and to rebuild and repair communities.

Eli Lilly and Company

Eli Lilly and Company will donate $2 million in cash contributions to various relief agencies and will match employee contributions up to $1 million more. In addition, Lilly will donate supplies of prescription medicine and insulin.

Merck

Merck has taken a three-pronged approach to respond to the tragedy: Cash donation: Merck is making a contribution of $3 million to the American Red Cross, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and several local agencies in support of their work in the massive relief effort. Product donation: To date, Merck has donated more than US $7.4 million in medicines to assist relief efforts in southern Asia. Merck products donated so far include antibiotics, Hepatitis A vaccine, pain reliever and medicines to treat parasites, asthma and upset stomach. Employee donation with company match: Merck's 60,000 employees worldwide may make cash contributions to three major agencies working to assist countries affected by the tsunamis - the American Red Cross International Fund, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Save the Children. Employee donations will receive matching funds from The Merck Company Foundation.

Monsanto:

Monsanto Company has committed up to US$1.2 million for emergency aid and longer-term rebuilding of the areas in Asia affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami. Employee contributions to the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNICEF or the Friends of the World Food Program will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the company. In addition, Monsanto is donating US$100,000 to the Friends of the World Food Program.

Novartis

Novartis has donated over $2 million in financial aid to relief agencies and donations of essential medicines, including a malaria treatment and a range of antibiotic drugs. All employee donations will be matched by the company. Novartis is working with local authorities and aid organizations to identify projects where assistance can be provided on a longer-term basis.

Pfizer

Pfizer will donate $10 million in direct grants to relief agencies, $25 million in product donations including Zithromax, Zyvox and Diflucan, as well as match all employee contributions to relief agencies.

Roche

Within hours of the disaster, local Roche affiliates in Southeast Asia provided medical and financial support and continues to do so, where needed. Anti-infective medications have been donated for up to 80,000 people. Donations are being coordinated through their Basel Headquarters and local affiliates in Southeast Asia.

Syngenta

Syngenta is making an initial donation of $100,000, as well as 10,000 safety kits with gloves and masks for the Red Cross and specific insecticides to reduce the risk of dengue fever spreading in affected regions. They plan to work together with regional and international agencies to continue additional aid initiatives and programs.

Wyeth

Wyeth has pledged $1 million in aid to various relief agencies including the International Red Cross and AmeriCares. Wyeth will also donate drugs such as Advil, Centrum, Robitussin, Dimetapp, Zosyn, and Lodine.
