Vaccine Development in India to be the Focus of Fireside Chat at BIO India International Conference

BIO India will be held September 12-13 at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai.</p>

Washington, D.C. and Mumbai, India (August 14, 2012)–India is the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines. Recognizing India as a model for the global vaccine market, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is pleased to announce programming to highlight this achievement; a Fireside Chat: Vaccine Development in India will be held at the 3rd Annual BIO India International Conference, September 12-13 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai, India. BIO has partnered with the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE), which represents Indian and Asian biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as leading investment banks and Venture Capital firms.

“BIO India will highlight the growth of India vaccine makers and their ability to make high-quality vaccines available at affordable prices, and present opportunities for Western companies seeking to do business within India’s borders,” said Alan Eisenberg, Executive Vice President of Emerging Companies and Business Development at BIO.

Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Founder, Chairman, and Managing Director, Serum Institute of India Ltd. will discuss Vaccine Development in India during a Fireside Chat on Wednesday, September 12th, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Dr. Poonawalla estimates that one out of every two children immunized worldwide receives a vaccine produced by Serum Institute.  Dr. Poonawalla has been called one of the most influential people in vaccines research and development.

Naazneen Karmali, India Editor, Forbes Asia, Mumbai Bureau Manager, Forbes will lead the discussion with Dr. Poonawalla.

Other sessions at BIO India include:

  • Commercializing Stem Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine

This session will discuss India’s progress in stem cells and gene therapies, and the increasing use of these technologies to treat a host of diseases. What types of collaborations and funding are fueling the space in India?  Companies at the forefront of the field will share their business strategies and discuss the commercial and regulatory issues involved with developing these specific treatments at the national and international level.
