BIO Pledges to Work with Elected Officials at Every Level to Incentivize Innovation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Wednesday, November 03, 2010) - Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) President and CEO Jim Greenwood released the following statement regarding the 2010 mid-term elections:

“We congratulate the winners of yesterday’s federal, state and local elections.  We look forward to working with members of the Congress, governors and state legislators in pursuit of public policies that continue U.S. leadership in biotech innovation and help facilitate job growth throughout our industry.

“Government leaders across our great nation face challenges and opportunities in examining how best to jump start our nation’s economy, create jobs, develop alternative sources of energy and continue to improve our health care system.  Our industry can help provide innovative technological solutions to these, and many other, critical issues.

“America’s biotechnology community is the global leader in the research and development of cutting-edge products, therapies and technologies to fight deadly diseases, expand agricultural production, clean the environment, and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil by developing clean, renewable energy alternatives.

“We are a strong sector of the domestic economy, directly employing 1.42 million Americans in high-wage, high quality jobs while supporting an additional 6.6 million jobs throughout the United States.

“BIO will continue to work aggressively in Washington, in the states, abroad, and in the court of public opinion to ensure that our member companies’ perspective is heard.  The citizens of the world depend upon the progress, change, and innovation provided by the biotechnology community.

“As the organization representing the full breadth of the biotechnology community, we will continue to seek bipartisan - and even non-partisan - approaches to ensure a policy environment that promotes continued U.S. leadership in biotech innovation and helps our industry foster domestic economic growth.”
