BIO's Analysis of Bush's 2004 Budget

Department of Energy

The Department of Energy directs the nation's energy policy along four principle priorities: protecting national security, ensuring access to energy resources, the developing of new science & technology, and maintaining high standards of environmental quality.

Budget Highlights:
  • $3.3 billion in 2004 for the Office of Science, including funding to ensure its continuing leadership in physical science research and its unique research in genomics, climate change, and supercomputing.
  • $444 million in 2004 for research and development of renewable energy technologies, such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. Biomass and biorefinery R&D is slated to receive $70 million of these funds.
