The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced that it is strengthening the permit conditions for field-testing plants genetically engineered to produce pharmaceutical and industrial compounds. The new requirements will be applied to the 2003 growing season.
The new conditions are science based and reflect the anticipated increase of requests for permits for plants genetically engineered to produce pharmaceutical and industrial compounds. The Federal Register Notice outlining these conditions is available online, and USDA accepted public comments for a 60-day period.
