2007 Global Biotech Crop Acreage Increases by 12 Percent Over 2006

Global biotech crop acreage reached 282 million acres in 2007, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA). In 1996, when the first biotech crops were commercially grown, seven million acres of biotech crops were grown worldwide. In 2007, a total of 282 million acres of biotech crops were planted in 23 countries by 12 million farmers. Notably, 90 percent or 11 million are resource-poor farmers in 12 developing countries.
